Happy World Laboratory Day!

23 Apr

As a health and science reporter for the Medill News Service, I got to see some pretty cool labs and talk to some really accomplished scientists.  We had the chance to spend a day at Argonne National Laboratory, which focuses on energy, biological and environmental systems and national security research.  We heard presentations from researchers at Northwestern University.

But by far, the coolest lab I got to visit was Paul Sereno’s Dino Lab at the University of Chicago.

Skull models in the Dino Lab.

We spent the morning surrounded by bones still in their plaster casings from one of his trips to excavate and collect specimens.  Skulls, and molds of skulls, lined the shelves.  And color models of dinosaurs filled the entire lab.

Our tour guide was Erin Fitzgerald, who prepares fossils and designs dino models in Sereno’s lab.  A fellow reporter at the Medill News Service wrote a great profile of her, which gives more insight into what it’s like to work at a dino lab.
