Happy Flower Moon Day!

17 May

Today at 11:09 is the full moon of May, which is called the Flower Moon.  I was completely unaware that full moons had different names depending on what month they were in.

The full moon in May is called the Flower Moon because there are lots of flowers around this time of year.  It can also be called the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon.  According to the Farmer’s Almanac, every month has its own name for the full moon.

Some of my favorites:

  • Full Worm Moon in March, when earthworms start coming up again.
  • Full Buck Moon in July, when the new antlers of buck deer start growing
  • Full Beaver Moon in November, since this was the time to set beaver traps to make sure there was enough warm fur to last the winter.

Also, Disney Fans, September it the month of the Full Corn Moon.  Apparently a Blue Moon is the name for the second full moon in a month, which happens once every 2-3 years.  So, if the month of September had two full moons one year, the second would be called the Blue Corn Moon.
