Happy National Maritime Day!

22 May

This holiday, created by Congress in 1933, is a day meant to celebrate those who work in the maritime industry and those who fight for our country on the seas.

When I think maritime and sailors, the iconic Times Square kiss is the first thing that comes to mind.  A soldier, so overcome by happiness that the war was finally over, grabs a nurse for a kiss to celebrate.  This photograph is timeless and was even immortalized with a statue this past summer.

But for years, no one knew who the male lip-locker was.

This article from 2007 in the Daily Mail online is hardly breaking news but even at four years old, I think the story is touching.  The sailor has finally been found!
